"The Girl in the Cafe"

WTCQD clears the air for movie fans,
with some recommended movie reviews. . .

THE GIRL IN THE CAFE - Life Can Bring Us to a Moment When We Can Be GREAT !

This may be the most brilliant film I've ever seen. It works on so many levels. It is hilarious at times, heart breakingly tender at others. It is about our individual struggles to be "true" to life, and through that same challenge to be true to humanity, our spirit, and our creator.

This film shows how difficult it is to be true to our heart, in a world that often recoils at truth, because it is too difficult or inconvenient to deal with. But, it also shows the raw power of a single lonely human being being true to his or her heart, and that by practicing this, we can change the world.

Much of the film is set in beautiful and haunting Reykjavik, Iceland, during a G-8 Summitt, where eight of the world's most powerful humans will decide the fate of millions of people unfortunate enough to be born on the other side of an economic line.

SPRING FORWARD - Nothing in Common. Everything to Gain

You've probably never heard of this movie, and therefore not seen it. You have a real treat ahead of you.

This subtle, gentle movie is about two men discovering . . . .

This film is the essence of Zen and Taoism. I don't think it ever mentions those terms, but it embodies the concepts more deeply than any film I've ever seen.

My prayer is that one day, there will be many films like this for young men and boys to grow up watching. Films that peel back the layers of our manhood to the tender reality of our humanity, rather than loud explosive movies that add calouses and hardness to our male psyches that Hollywood now pumps out like fast food burgers.

A film like this gives hope. I met Ned Beatty once, when my son was a toddler, and told Mr. Beatty how much we enjoyed him in Superman. I wish I'd seen this film, so I could have thanked him for this beautiful performance. Ned, if you are reading this, I just want to say . . . "thank you."

BUTTERFLY - A Powerful tale of growing up in a country growing apart

An exquisite film from Spain, about a young boy and his grammer school teacher.

This film goes right to the heart of humanity, and is about our role as human beings as meantors to the next generation. Yet, it is about much more, about our human tendency to let dogma and political fervor blind us to our humanity.

Every human being should see this brilliant film !!

PHENOMENON

This is one of the most well made and richly developed films I have ever had the pleasure to watch. Not one second is wasted, each seen pours lessons for humanity across the viewer's eyes, ears, and heart.

John Travolta's character suddenly is blessed "or cursed" by an ability to assimilate information and become aware of solutions at a staggering speed. His visions of possibililty are met with fear and resistence as he causes people's vision of reality and possibility to be challenged at their core.

His beautiful character is torn down by those who cannot understand what he offers their lives and world. They only see him breaking apart the limited view they had of the world.

All the characters in this film are brought to life by perfect performances. If you only see one more film in your life
. . . make sure it is Phenomenon.

GREEN FINGERS - Imagine the "Full Monty" in full bloom.

This is an excellant film based on a true story of prison convicts in England becoming part of an experimental program to make gardeners out of them.

Given that gardening is a national obsession in England this film has a fun and very British quality. However, beyond that it shows that prison can be a place of reform and rehabilitation.

For those of us around the world attempting to make Tai Chi and Qigong available as a rehabilitation tool in prison programs worldwide, this film is a great validation of our work.

A fun filled adventure into humanity's potential for growth and change.

If you have a bad day this week, watch this DVD and your troubles will seem very far away. A wonderful time for all who watch it !!

THE JOY LUCK CLUB - An Oliver Stone Production, from a book by Amy Tan.

One of the most beautiful films ever made, about so many levels of humanity.

Although "The Joy Luck Club" is about four Chinese mothers and their four American Chinese daughters, it is actually about all of us. It explores the disconnect between our parents who have endured war and enormous hardship and our generation who benefited from their efforts to see that we had more "hope" in our lives.

"The Joy Luck Club" is about family lost and found, and the patterns that families can carry from generation to generation until we awaken and break the chains of the past. It is about empowerment, of women, but really it's about all of us shaking off the shackles that hold us back in our lives.

The fact that this movie and the sixteen child, teenage, and adult actresses that played these four women and their daughters did not get one single Academy Award is the harshest indictment of Hollywood that could ever be leveled.

AKIRA KUROSAWA'S DREAMS - A stunning example of cinematic artistry.

God gave a gift to the world, and his name was Akira Kurosawa.

"Dreams" flows across the screen like the rich paint of a Van Gogh painting. Mr. Kurosawa opens his heart on many levels in the panoramic vision of life. His images mesmerize with beauty and haunt with meaning.

In one of the Dream sequences a Japanese soldier is haunted by the hounds of his memories of war. It was as though Akira was writing about my own father who was haunted by years of frontline combat during World War II. Which is a perfect example of what makes Mr. Kurasawa the master of cinema, his ability to find the universal humanity that touches all of us deeply.

Sit back and prepare to be permeated by Dreams.

THE DISH - Based on a true story.

This Australian film has the unusual quality of being hilarious and yet deeply profound.

"The Dish" is a hilarious look at how two English speaking cultures (Australia and America) can fail to communicate so miserably.

Yet, it also touches with a simple vulnerable humanity of its characters and also of the union of all human beings from all societies in our wonderment of space and man's attempts to venture out, not as Americans, or Australians, or Russians, or Chinese . . . but as one humanity taking our first baby steps out into the world beyond our precious blue home. A step that makes us realize just how close we really are as a human family.

Make some (Paul Newman's) popcorn, and prepare to blast off into a wonderul night at the movies.

I AM SAM - Love is all you need.

This American film is a deeply moving experience.

"I am Sam" takes us on a journey between two worlds, the one of the learning disabled, and the one of the heart disabled (most of us moving too fast in an even faster world).

Sam (Sean Penn), the learning disabled star of this film is thrown into the world of a high powered Hollywood lawyer played by Michelle Pfeiffer. Their worlds collide in extremely funny and profoundly moving ways.

This is in my opinion Sean Penn's finest role, and Michelle Pfeiffer brilliantly supports his masterful performance. This film touched me deeply, as I taught learning disabled students Tai Chi a few years back. When I arrived for classes my students hugged me and and patted my head and stroked my face, and were completely unashamed to tell me how happy they were to see me..

One day the administrator of the program told me that I should not allow the students to hug me, because we were supposed to be training them to live in the world. I still believe that we teachers, and the world, should have been learning something from those students, and "I am Sam" brings this truth home beautifully weaving its scenes within the lyrical lines of The Beatles.

THE WAR - What's worth fighting for?

This American film is a heartwarming look at family, and a sobering look at war.

"The War" explores the disconnect between a man who's experienced war and his family back home who can never feel what he has experienced.

Yet, ultimately this film is about a man struggling to reconnect with his own humanity. War is a rage against the things we love, like when we rage and throw something down. But in war the result isn't broken cups, but broken people.

Kevin Costner and the other characters all unfold masterful performances that bring the profound lessons of this film straight to the heart and soul of the viewer.

"The War" is about much more than even this. Watch it. You'll be glad you did.

CALENDAR GIRLS - Inspired by a True Story

A light hearted film out of the UK, based on a true story of some rebellious older women in a proper national women's club who break all the rules.

This film is filled with images of Tai Chi, which was a big part of what I liked about it. Tai Chi tends to make us more independent of tribal limitations, and this movie conveys this in a fun and light hearted way.

ROSEWOOD - In 1923, a black town in Florida was burned to the ground

Based on a true story, this film is a somber look at how mob mentality and deception can destroy human beings.

"Rosewood" has much to tell modern America, and the world, about how we proceed into the future when mass media can spread information at light speed - information that may not always be true. And whether we stampede into actions, or whether we take the time to hold the space for the truth to surface first.

Masterful performances permeate this film. It is a hard film to watch, but a great film nonetheless.

RABBIT PROOF FENCE - Based on a True Story

This film brings to our modern eyes the inhumanity we can unleash on one another by buying into the delusion that we are "better" than some other race, or nation.

"Rabbit Proof Fence" is a courageous self examination by Australian film makers of a stain on their own history. However, it speaks to many of us around the world, Americans in our treatment of American Indians, New Zealand's experience with the Maori tribespeople, Spain and Italy's experience with indigenous peoples in North and South America, and on and on around the planet.

Thank you to Australia for creating a film that can help us all begin to come to terms with our nation's pasts, and with indigenous people's worldwide. The world owes you a dept of appreciation for this courageous film.

I saw a documentary about the children of Aborigine descent who performed in this film, and the making of this film. These are children who really had little knowledge of the times this film was about. Yet, during one of the scenes when the children were being forced away from their families, I was powerfully affected when after the scene was over all the children were weeping uncontrollably. The director had to stop the shoot to come over and console them.

The past is held in the cells of humanity, passed down from generation to generation in unseen ways. We can't sweep the past under the rug, we must bring it into the light, so that it can begin to let go of our future. Otherwise it festers below the surface, like a lingering buried thorn.

THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION

A testament to the human spirit. A line in the film states that freedom is something that exists in our hearts and minds and can never be taken away from us, unless we give it up.

In life too often we give up our freedom even as we walk the streets unshackled.

Andy Dufre (played by Tim Robbins) is a man wrongly imprisoned, but he decides that no matter what, he will hang onto his humanity. The system cannot beat Andy Dufre, because what makes him who he is runs too deep to be removed by another human being.

Andy Dufre's story may be the story of Nelson Mandela, or anyone of us who decides that our humanity is worth holding onto.

This film is a classic. If you haven't seen it, now is the time. Enjoy !!
