ALLERGIES and ASTHMA. The stress-reduction benefits of T'ai Chi and QiGong help the body maintain elevated DHEA levels. Low DHEA levels have been directly linked to allergies. High stress levels are linked to the frequency and intensity of asthmatic reactions as well.

Asthma sufferers may be able to better control their breathing and improve their exercise performance with some training in tai chi, new research indicates . . .

The researchers conclude that tai chi can help people control asthma and prove to be an effective, non-pharmacologic adjunctive therapy for people with persistent asthma.

The authors are on staff in the department of medicine at Ramathibodi Hospital in Thailand.

Qi Gong and Tai Chi for Allergies
In a 2003 study published in the American Journal of Chinese Medicine, researchers found that qi gong training significantly increases levels of monocytes and lymphocytes, types of white blood cells involved in the immune response. In a 2005 article in the journal Neuroscience, researchers also found that qi gong practice has a statistically significant effect on concentrations of neurochemicals, which are important in modulating immune system function. Studies like these, while still rare, indicate some of the potential physiological benefits of qi gong and tai chi practice.

Asthma. Preliminary research indicates that Tai Chi, as well as other mind-body exercises like Qigong, may be helpful for asthmatics, both children and adults. 12 weeks of Tai Chi training improved the lung function of children with asthma in a small Taiwanese study. A small Thailand study suggested that adult asthma sufferers may be able to better control their breathing and improve their exercise performance using Tai Chi training. After six weeks of Tai Chi training, the patients said they felt more comfortable during a six-minute walk and increased their maximum work rate and maximum oxygen consumption. Food allergies are potentially life-threatening for children and adults. Food allergies among children have increased 18 percent since 1997, and in 2007, some 3 million U.S. children had food allergies, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. Currently, there is no treatment for the allergies, so avoidance is the only protection.

"We can reverse the peanut allergic reaction," said lead researcher Dr. Xiu-Min Li, director of the Center for Chinese Herbal Therapy for Allergy and Asthma at Mount Sinai.
