April 29, 2006

April 29th, 2006, The 8th Annual World Tai Chi and Qigong Day, but first ever event in San Francisco! We put World Tai Chi and Qigong Day on the map in San Francisco!!

Bustling Union Square, the heart of beautiful, romantic San Francisco, CA…two blocks from Chinatown and financial district, ensconced by palm trees, flowers, tall elegant buildings of notables such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, the Fairmont Hotel, Macy’s, Tiffany’s, the spiritual Chimes of Grace Cathedral and of course, the ding-ding of the famous street cars…all there at the center of the world. Local San Franciscans, South and East Bay Area, Marin…plus visitors from world-wide, Australia, France, England, Germany, China, Japan, etc. joined us on that day for a festive and yet reflective World Tai Chi & Qigong Day.

Throughout the day, 10am to 4:30pm, there were more than a thousand people coming and going through Union Square. A constant though changing crowd of at least over 150 people gathered, observed and participated and thoroughly enjoyed themselves with the programs and exhibits. They experienced instant improvement with their aches and pains and energy levels. Many highly skilled practitioners from all aspects of Qi, from healing to taiji and martial arts, tuina/ahn moh Chinese classical massage, herbs, Academy of Fine Arts exhibition, and Jazz for Peace music and Qi-Dancing, all celebrated together. A ventriloquist friend with her doll Casey thrilled all with her performance. Projection of the voice is very much a qigong art, just as remote healing is. The sounds and lyrics of world famous Rick DellaRatta, brought peace and joy to our hearts. We had 3 weeks to plan (because at the last minute I could be in town) and my good friends, many who had supported our annual World Congress on Qigong, poured forth to support this day and I am ever grateful. A spectacular program was miraculously put into place in 2 weeks time, thanks to many of my volunteers and friends. Lots of work, but we made it fun! Our deep appreciation for the fine cooperation of The Recreation and Park of San Francisco, Sandy Lee (in the early 1980’s our mutual friend with severe liver cancer was helped greatly with Qigong!), and MJM Management firm, Karen and Brian.

The event was sponsored (organized and financed) by the East West Academy of Healing Arts, and chaired by Dr.Effie Chow, co-chairs were: Gigi OH, Lixin HUANG, Alex FENG, Donald and Cheryl Lynne RUBBO; with endorsement from Speaker Pro-Tempore Assemblyman Dr. Leland Yee, and assistance from 15 co-sponsors/exhibitors and contributors: TCMedia/Kung Fu and Tai Chi Magazine/Tiger Claw, Gigi Oh (Co-Chair) and Thomas Oh: American College on Traditional Chinese Medicine, Lixin Huang (Co-Chair): Alex Feng (Co-Chair) and Melani, Zhi Dao Guan, The Taoist Center: Rubbo Internal Arts, Donald and Cheryl Lynne Rubbo (Co-Chairs): SOMA Beverage Company, Michele Thorne: Ashitaba Herbal Farm, Linda and Sadao Hayano: Jixing Li: Tony Chan, Omei Group,: Philip Wong, Pacific Wushu Group: East West Academy of Healing Arts: American Qigong Association: Revitalized Water, Joe Quinn: Jazz for Peace, Rick DellaRatta, NY....and 47 performers… It was a spectacular display of talents and forms, initiating newcomers with awe to the world of Tai Chi and Qigong as well as making proud the seasoned practitioner. Please look at the exciting program schedule below to appreciate the numerous specific cosponsors, exhibitors, contributors, volunteers, and also those who presented in the program proper! Thank you, thank you, thank you everyone!

My vision was to have WTCQD and this opportune time to influence many who knew nothing about this field (is why in Union Square!)….To excite the newcomers to discover the magical phenomenon of tai chi and qigong. Children to seniors participated as performers and as audience. The music of Jazz For Peace from New York, and the artistry of the Academy of Fine Arts Exhibit under large white umbrellas graced the huge square …both lent a fantasy aura of the Arabian nights.

Many, many raving comments were received… “What a fantastic experience!” “Exceptional performances!” “What a peaceful feeling we experienced!” “My pain is gone!” “The kids were so darling!” “Never seen nor felt anything like this before, I want to learn more!” and many more equally heart-felt comments were uttered. The final following example is most appreciated and speaks to a good future for WTCQD in San Francisco!

A discussion with a gentleman who identified himself as from a governmental agency said, “I stayed for every minute of your entire program from 10am to now 4:45pm and I think the whole performance was so superbly executed and beautiful that I would like to offer that next year we should collaborate and fund this as an important cultural program. Let’s be sure to get together when I return from my China trip next month. I will call you.” (Have a great trip, and we sure will look forward to that call, Sir!!!!)

With that, plans are already underway for next year’s event, Bill! That is a great compliment to all of you who so quickly responded, participated and made it so special. I thank all my friends who rallied around and came forward and made this a huge success. All monies collected via donations ($830) will support Qigong Research and clinical service in Cancer and Disabilities. East West Academy of Healing Arts sponsored the expenses ($4800) required to put on this event. (SF City requires all types of permits, management fees, sound systems, security, etc for any group event over 25 people –lucky people in cities that do not require that!) Already $76 has been designated to VB, a client who had a stroke in 2004, for a special foot brace boot, because insurance does not cover this and it is essential for her progress. We made a prior agreement with her daughter, CS, that 25% of what she raises personally from her friends on WTCQD would go toward her mother’s boots. From being totally aphasic and bed-ridden with pain, VB, since Qigong therapy (as a last desperate attempt for help), is talking and getting up into the wheelchair. The boots are necessary to reduce and prevent further, the rigid extension of her right foot to enable her to stand again.

As in daily practice of Qigong and in the following years for WTCQD, please remember that in spite of any adversities, do not let negative entities dominate, the bottom line is, with optimism, wit, lots of love, organizational skills, a bevy of friends, making it first priority, everything is possible regardless of time frame, disbelief, or negative attitudes. Bill, (& others?) you have had many challenges too. My sincere admiration is with you for your Herculean efforts also with much personal expenses throughout the years and your fine example of commitment to promoting Qigong! Thank you for your role model.

A further note of interest: Rain was predicted for the day. The mist was becoming rain at 10am just as we opened the day before we cultivated the Qi. Following the cultivation of the Qi, meditating on the weather, the misty rain stopped, was cloudy all day but it did not rain as predicted, and at 4:30pm, the full sun came out brightly as if to say “we approve of what went on this day and now we celebrate”! One can choose to believe it or not, that with Qigong it is possible to influence weather or not. Can anyone share similar experiences?

My loving wishes to all for a beautiful year until we meet again the 9th Annual World Tai Chi and Qigong Day!

Attached are a program page and a picture collage because individual pictures would take up too much space. Check with for more info and photos.
